Travel Time

We’re going on a trip in Europe, but the music keeps coming with two spooky birds of a feather, a literal 80s cover, and song picks from the past and present

This Saturday, we‘re traveling to Germany for ten days to visit family. It’s going to be a wild trip that takes us from the very south to the very north of the country, plus a day in Dublin to celebrate my birthday. We’ll travel by plane, train, and car. Only a boat trip is missing — maybe we‘ll take a little cruise on Dublin‘s River Liffey to cover that, too.

Ten days away from home comes with much preparation for glamglare: we need to find, write, and schedule Song Pick of the Day posts in advance. Ideally, we want to travel without laptops. Also, a vacation becomes much more relaxing if you don‘t have to do too much of your day-to-day routine.1

We’ll spend more than 24 hours in Dublin for the first time ever. The city has a long musical history, so we hoped to see a show, but no such luck on a Monday2. However, Elke was able to dig up some Dublin-related music trivia: Bruce Springsteen played his very first stadium show at Shane Castle in front of 95,000 people on June 1, 1985, exactly 41 years before our visit to the city. Surely, the hometown heroes U2 can top this? Yes, but only six years later, when they played two consecutive shows at Shane Castle.

Discovery of the Week: Penelope Trappes and Gazelle Twin

Penelope Trappes and Elizabeth Bernholz, aka Gazelle Twin, have much in common. Penelope moved to Brighton, England, from Australia, where Elizabeth started her career. They are both drawn to darkness and unsettling horror soundscapes, yet they have families and upbeat public personas3.

So it is no wonder that Penelope states:

If there is such a thing as past lives, I’m sure Gazelle Twin and I have met before. Kindred Spirits… To have her rework ‘Sleep’ with PRISMA9 was such a perfect fit. The new version brings a distinct power to the song that makes its sound infinitely spacious and epic, without sacrificing the horror!I absolutely adore its new impact.

Hence, their collaboration on the Opvs Novum: A Requiem Reworked remix album of A Requiem, “Sleep Sleep (Gazelle Twin & PRIZMA9 Rework),” feels very natural and brings some serious chill to a hot summer day.

Cover Song of the Week: Essex - Eighties

The London band Killing Joke released “Eighties” in 1984, when the decade was in full swing. Covering it 42 years later could be an homage or an ironic prank. Chicago-based rock’n’roller Essex chose the former, staying faithful to the original’s urgency and even filming a video that could have aired in the MTV era.

This Week in glamglare history

Zach Alwin, Logon Rescott, and White Lies

1 Year Ago: White Lies – Nothing On Me

“Nothing On Me” is one of those instantly addictive songs. It is the opening track on White Lies’ 2025 album Night Light.

5 Years Ago: Logan Prescott – tongue

“tongue” is a story about new love that gave Elke “the goosebumps.” Los Angeles singer, songwriter, and producer Logan Prescott has released a string of singles since 2019 but has not yet released an album.

10 Years Ago: Zach Alwin - Burnin’ Up

Zach Alwin is a singer, songwriter, and producer who has released a slew of singles under his own name, but according to his website, he focuses on collaborating with other musicians. The funky “Burnin’ Up” and the EP mentioned in the article are only available on SoundCloud.

Outdoor Season

Nine moments from recent days around Lower Manhattan: terrace afternoons and evenings, warm light, open skies, and the first real feeling of summer in the city. Somewhere between Brooklyn Bridge views, restored Seaport landmarks (the lighthouse!), and sunlight filling the apartment occasionally, the outdoor season has officially begun. Stay tuned for more to come.

  1. There is still the playlisting and the social posts, but they take only a few minutes on the phone. ↩︎
  2. Miki Berenyi just passed through a few weeks ago – that would have been a magical coincidence. ↩︎
  3. We met Gazelle Twin in 2014 after a show and saw her for the first time without a mask. Later the became more open and comfortable to show her face. ↩︎
