New Age Healers - Moored
Shoegaze shimmer meets Britpop grandeur in New Age Healers’ beautifully melodic “Moored.”
“Moored” feels immediately familiar, yet New Age Healers never quite let the song go where you expect it to. The Seattle band folds shoegaze into a distinctly British-feeling melodic sensibility, with vocal harmonies that bring Oasis to mind and a sweeping quality reminiscent of The Verve. Guitars shimmer and swell while the song keeps subtly shifting beneath them.
Sonically bright and expansive, “Moored” carries considerably heavier concerns underneath. Frontman Owen Murphy describes the approach behind the band’s upcoming fifth album, Blowing Smoke Through the Choir:
“These are political songs hidden within love songs. There's no possible way someone like me can make a record right now and not, in some way, shape, or form have what's happening in the world affect it thematically.”
Murphy also produces KEXP’s The Morning Show with John Richards, an experience he says has found its way into the new record. Intelligent, melodic, and beautifully layered, “Moored” keeps revealing little turns you didn’t quite see coming.
