Black Doldrums - Echoes [Video]
All the pull of the music you grew up loving, with the thrill of discovering a new favorite.
I loved “Echoes” on the spot. By the third play, I had started jotting down my thoughts, trying to pinpoint the references—all those bands I loved growing up and still love today. Then it hit me: Black Doldrums make music in their own right! I was so busy tracing the familiar that I hadn’t quite put into words how exciting it is to hear something this fresh.
The vocals draw me in, while heavy synths, moody guitars, and a driving new wave beat keep me hooked. It’s a mesmerizing combination, and I’m delighted to have stumbled upon it. “Echoes” is the London post-punk trio’s fourth preview of their forthcoming album Repetition Compulsion, out November 13 via Fuzz Club.
The song came together on the road, with a stop in Belgrade providing an unexpected spark. Kevin Gibbard says:
“This track was finally completed while touring and playing a show in Belgrade, Serbia, where the city’s warmth, creativity and discussions about local history inspired the song’s lyrics. Our time spent there won’t be forgotten. It’s one of those special moments and opportunities you wouldn’t have got if we weren’t in a band. I’ve never written a song whilst on tour before. Realistically, it never happens, but this one came out in one go, sat in the van.”
