Maripool - Alone Tonight
Maripool circles something she won't quite name — and the not-knowing is the point
"Alone Tonight" draws you in with a repeated guitar riff over an electronic beat, building to a dramatic finale when the strings arrive. It's a journey of self-discovery that London-via-Lisbon singer-songwriter Maripool, aka Natacha Simões, follows both in this single and across her debut album, Rotten Luck. She never reveals what actually happened — the thing that presumably led to her move to London — but the song lets us feel its weight when she closes it with the wish to be left alone.
Natacha explains:
I think for me it’s the saddest song in the record, it’s about being back with my family in the place I grew up but never really talking about the things that went wrong and just pretending everything is fine.
