MACEDO - Do You Believe Me Now?

Lovely pop carries a pointed question about being heard, believed, and the cost of waiting.

I have a soft spot for twins, so sisters Michelle and Melissa Macedo, who make music as MACEDO, had my attention before I even pressed play. Their new single “Do You Believe Me Now?” kept it with an inviting pop sound, while the story behind it gives the title a weight that might not be immediately apparent. There is a painful difference between being heard when you need help and being believed only much later.

Michelle Macedo explains:

“This story is about a college experience of intrusion and harassment. After looking back after the MeToo movement and on the heels of Title IX, it’s a reflection of a scary experience we had shortly after starting college. On our own and independent for the first time, we too quickly discovered the realities of a world that consistently fails to protect women in situations where they are unsafe on campus. This song comments on the fact that oftentimes, when the damage has been done and is allowed to keep continuing by people in power, it is too late when we are later vindicated in others finally saying out loud this person is a danger to women.”

That context makes the question in the title linger long after the pop has drawn you in.
