BirdyHop - Empty Pages

It’s been almost ten years since we first featured BirdyHop, with Oliver writing about them back then. A few years later, I premiered "This Time," and now I’m happy to be the one talking about BirdyHop’s new single "Empty Pages."

Light guitars and soft, tender vocals give "Empty Pages" an immediately reassuring quality, even as melancholy runs gently underneath. There’s something comforting about the song’s unhurried presence, and its simplicity feels particularly fitting for a return after seven years away.

BirdyHop say:

"Empty Pages is our first release in seven years (since 'This Time'!) and is out on 28 August. A lot changed for us during that time gap, both around us and closer to home, and we only really wanted to come back if we felt we had something to say. This song came out of trying to process some of that time - memory, absence and the intense feeling of things changing while life carries on."

The duo continues:

"Musically we wanted something quite simple and direct: rocky without just piling on distortion, with a bit of that melodic/new-wave feel we’ve always liked. We recorded it at Abbey Road, largely in a day, and deliberately played big chunks live together with our friend Isaac Keating on drums, so it kept a slightly loose, human feel rather than becoming too polished."

As we’ve come to know BirdyHop, they have a knack for making music that feels understated without ever feeling slight. "Empty Pages" is a welcome return, carrying seven years of change with a beautifully light touch.
