Virginia MacNaughton - The Thread
With “The Thread,” Virginia MacNaughton delivers something hypnotic, immersive, and deeply powerful.
Utterly mesmerizing. My verdict after listening to “The Thread” on repeat for the umpteenth time. “The Thread” is part of a double single that singer/songwriter Virginia MacNaughton has just released, offering a first glimpse of her upcoming album, The Thread, out on February 27.
The second track, “Wolf Moon,” takes a quieter route. It lacks the urgent pull of “The Thread,” but once again highlights Virginia’s gorgeous, expressive vocals. Her work has often been compared to Kate Bush, which makes sense in terms of production and atmosphere, though I would also place her alongside a more contemporary artist like Tamara Lindeman of The Weather Station.
Learning more about the album’s journey adds another layer. The record was already close to completion in 2021 when life, in its most heartbreaking forms, intervened. Virginia lost her father, and in spring 2025, her wife, after four and a half years together, passed away as well. What began then had to pause.
Now, The Thread resumes its journey and arrives in February 2026. About the album, Virginia says:
“I had to complete the circle. The Bach prelude at the end of the album marks the memory of my dad – a piece he played all his life, Bach was his great love, and he taught me to play the prelude as a child.”
