School Of X - Exist

A bright melody offers something to hold on to as “Exist” finds hope amid dark thoughts.

When “Exist,” the new single by School Of X, landed in my mailbox, the artist’s name sounded familiar. And indeed, five years ago, I featured “Race for Caress.” It’s always fabulous to discover that a musician I came to like continues to make music, especially when the new song makes me happy to hear from them again.

Behind School Of X is Copenhagen-based Rasmus Littauer, who has been through a particularly difficult time. With its bright, upbeat melody and dark, pensive lyrics, “Exist” strikes me as his own little cheer-me-up, a way of finding some light while still giving the darkness words. He explains:

“It’s a song about suffering from delusions and the anxiety that inevitably comes with them, while doing everything you can to function in the world. For me, it has been about feeling persecuted. At times, it it became so extreme, that I thought it would kill me. That’s also why ’Exist’ is a small miracle, because I wrote it at a time when I was at my lowest.”

Knowing where the song began makes its brightness all the more affecting. Littauer finds hope in the people around him and in the person he wants to be for others. He continues:

“Love and family are what ultimately prevail. People who lift you up and can be a source of pure life energy, giving you a new perspective on how to find your way back and move forward."

That life energy comes through in “Exist,” and I’m happy to have School Of X back on my radar—and perhaps on yours, too.
