REX - broken

Dark pop meets heavy guitars: REX’s “broken” carries emotional weight without spelling everything out.

REX - broken

The Melbourne pop artist REX adds a good dose of heavy guitars to her new song “broken,” pushing her sound into darker territory. The tension between pop melodies and abrasive textures gives the track an uneasy edge that mirrors its emotional weight. “It’s not your fault that you’re broken,” REX sings — a line that lands with both care and distance, leaving plenty of space for the listener to sit with its meaning.

She explains:

I wrote this song after watching the Netflix series "Adolescence"; which highlights the "red pilling" of young men in our society. I wrote "broken" from the perspective of a desperate mother, sister, teacher etc who feels the need to place responsibility on someone for the behaviour of a young man in their life. I've added some metal elements to the production of this song not only to convey the intensity of the emotion attached to the lyrics, but to manoeuvre REX away from clean classic pop, into a darker and grungier, mixed-genre pop.
