King Mei Mei - Slow Strobe Light [Video]
Trusting your own pace gets an exuberant soundtrack in “Slow Strobe Light,” complete with a thrilling rush of guitar.
“Slow Strobe Light” bursts with feelings and possibilities, and beneath its forcefulness lies an encouraging thought: trust yourself, even when you can’t yet see where you’re headed. The debut single from King Mei Mei, the new project of New York musician, guitarist, and stand-up comedian Charlene Kaye, pairs that optimism with a theatrical flair that makes its emotional pull all the more compelling.
The sensual video, directed by Anima Works, gives Kaye room to explore different characters and personas, her pleasure in playing them shining through. By the time she lets loose with some serious guitar shredding toward the end, the visuals are right there with her, giving that exhilarating finale its moment.
Kaye says about the creation of “Slow Strobe Light”:
“I wrote this song from rock bottom. I was lost and unwell. I had met someone who felt like a soul mate, and right as things felt serious, I crashed out and ran away like I ran away from every other person I got close with over the last several years. To my surprise, 3 years later, time brought us back together and now the song has a completely new meaning to me. It’s a lesson in trusting myself, trusting my pace, and trusting that the real is the right way, even though it might not feel like it at the time.”
There’s something liberating about hearing that message take such a bold, exuberant form, with room for uncertainty and the thrill of what might come next.
