Freezing Cold - Backlight

Occasionally, a song grabs me right away—by its vibe, its sentiment, or a lyric that hits home. That’s exactly what happened with "Backlight," the new track by NYC-based indie-rock trio Freezing Cold. What frontman Jeff Cunningham says about the song struck a chord with me. Maybe the band name helped too: today marks the hottest day in New York since 2012, and anything but “freezing cold.” And the song? Staying with the metaphors—it’s a scorching rock gem.
Jeff explains:
“If you’re part of the disposable camera generation, you probably know the feeling of flipping through a stack of old photos and getting hit with a flood of emotions. Some are total mysteries, completely lost in time. Since you made that 4x6 memory, life added context. People have passed away. Others, you thought you’d know for years to come. Some of those expectations held true, others not quite. We tried to capture the weird mix of nostalgia and surprise on what is probably the poppiest song on the album.”
The video, maybe unsurprisingly, was sparked by the discovery of an old box of undeveloped film, a perfect visual metaphor for memory and meaning rising back to the surface. “Backlight” will appear on Freezing Cold’s sophomore album Treasure Pool, due out August 1 via Don Giovanni Records.
