Demob Happy - Power Games

With “Power Games,” Demob Happy prove that going independent can sound this bold.

There’s something undeniably satisfying about a band that sounds this sure of itself. On “Power Games,” Demob Happy build a thick, thumping carpet of guitars and bass, driven by propulsive beats that perfectly underline the song’s tension. The vocals don’t fight the weight, but glide over it, agile and cool, adding a sharp edge to the groove.

I first caught Demob Happy live at The New Colossus Festival and was struck not only by the force of their set, but also by how thoughtful they were offstage. Even earlier, they had appeared in our 3 Is A Band three-piece series. They are still a trio, and what they told me back in 2017 — in the shadow of Brexit and certain presidencies — feels just as relevant today.

“Power Games” is part of their fourth album, The Grown-Ups Are Talking, now out via their own label, a significant step for the band. Frontman Matthew Marcantonio puts it like this:

“We're very excited to share this record - it’s been a proper journey. From recording at rancho (15 songs in 9 days), which was a dream, to starting our own label and going independent, to writing through a lot of personal change - it's very gratifying to reach the other side in one piece and get it out there".

A riff-heavy reminder that independence can sound this powerful. Listen to “Power Games,” our Song Pick of the Day.
