Young Martyrs - Is There Anybody Out There [Video]
A gentle guitar opening that draws you in before “Is There Anybody Out There” unfolds into something bigger.
“Is There Anybody Out There,” the new single by Young Martyrs, opens with a gentle guitar shimmer that immediately pulls you in. It sets a tone that feels quietly familiar — like those understated soundtrack moments that carry an entire scene without asking for attention (think Jerry Maguire). From there, the song unfolds with a natural sense of lift, led by big, expressive vocals that never lose that initial intimacy.
It took a few listens before the video came into focus — and it’s a striking one. Still, it’s worth sitting with the song on its own first. The cinematic visuals are powerful, but they also guide the experience quite closely, leaving less room for your own reading. The title alone carries its own history, and for many, an immediate association. Here, though, the question lands in a more personal, searching way — less declarative, more open.
Discussing the lyrical themes, vocalist and lyricist Tom Corneill says:
“‘Is There Anybody Out There?’ is a song everyone needs right now; a song about desperately seeking connection and answers. It’s about feeling adrift as time slips past you, over you, under you. It’s about loss and missing someone, and missing the good things you once had. It’s about growing up and realising you had no idea that while the best times were happening, maybe you were meant to be holding onto them tighter because one day the moment will have passed.”
The video takes a more expansive route. Shot at Twickenham Film Studios and directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Tim James Brown, it follows the singer as a drifting astronaut — a cinematic take that brings the song’s themes into a vivid visual space.
