A real-life mishap turns into a quiet reflection on feeling stuck and going in circles.

A real-life mishap becomes a metaphor for a phase in life where you feel stuck, going in circles without getting anywhere. The band’s vocalists sing in unison, giving the song a shared, almost communal perspective rather than telling a single story.

Widemouth is an indie-folk quartet from Chicago, led by singers and guitarists Jamie Eder and Mak Carnahan, who met at Northwestern University. They announced their debut album, No Gasoline, out May 29 via Urban Scandal Records.

Jamie explains:

“One time I ran out of gas in the middle of an intersection in Chicago. I rolled over to the side of the road and jogged to a gas station. It was freezing. A good example of the kind of ‘ignore my problems until they just become fundamentally unignorable’ strategy I was employing for a long time.”
