Where Have the Night Owls Gone?

Elke and I have long decided that the day is more precious than the promise of a long night, so we are usually in bed early. But last Saturday we made an exception for Neggy Gemmy, who celebrated the release of her new album She Comes From Nowhere at Brooklyn's Baby’s All Right. It was a hot A/C-less summer party with a friendly vibe that matched Gemmy’s upbeat music. Interestingly, though, the crowd started thinning out shortly after midnight, and by the time Gemmy left the stage and Cherry Glazerr took over as DJ, the room was only a quarter full.

In other words, it appears that many younger people also prefer to call it a night early. This is consistent with a New York Times article, in which Luke Fortney explores bars late at night. His conclusion: 2 AM is the new 4 AM. Why? People’s preferences and the city change. NYC might never sleep, but its inhabitants do.

If you want to feel a bit of our late-night experience without wasting a morning sleeping in, listen to our five Neggy Gemmy-inspired songs. Dim the lights, turn the AC off, start dancing and you are almost there.

  • George Clanton is a long-time collaborator and partner of Neggy Gemmy. His music is often categorized as “vaporwave,” an electronic music subgenre characterized by retro-futuristic vibes constructed from glitchy samples. The heavy beats of “You Lost Me There” get any party instantly moving.
  • “Secrets (Your Fire)” is a scorching hot pop track by LA synth-pop duo Magdalena Bay from 2021. The vibe is moody and chill, and we could go on like this forever.
  • “She Comes from Nowhere,” the title track of Neggy Gemmy’s latest album, has 60s cinema vibes, and if you want, you can see the titular woman enter a Sean Connery Bond movie in your mind’s eye. It is perfect to take a breather and dream for a moment.
  • “Bunny is a Rider” by NYC artist Caroline Polachek is a bright, bouncy track that is not easy to decipher, but a lot of fun.
  • The Australian musician Katie Day brings us to the experimental side of pop. “Only to Trip and Fall Down Again” is a glitchy, heavily processed song – a cliffhanger before we call it a night.

  • Rainlights is back with a new song written "during a moment of giddiness," when everything is in the open. "Somewhere" delivers an upbeat story with her signature melancholy.
  • Enjoy a moment of nostalgia with a heartfelt love gem, "Really Wanna Be With You" by Durand Jones & The Indications. Their fourth album, Flowers, was released on June 27.
  • The new song "Solar Kiss" by Brooklyn artist Kinneret is an irresistible mood booster.
  • Honey, That's You" is about "the kind of love that grounds you and makes you better," says Tyler Herwig, singer-songwriter from Minnesota.
  • “What if Icarus lived? What if someone thought he was the answer to their prayers?” The Chicago indie-rock band Smut goes deep in the latest single “Waste Me” from their new album Tomorrow Comes Crashing.
  • "So Kind" is an elegant future pop track by London-via-Poland singer and producer Ula.

Nine Photos of Neggy Gemmy’s Show at Baby’s All Right

My nine photos are the visual companion to Oliver’s newsletter article. The vibe at Baby’s was lush and inviting — part laid-back summer, part radiant harmony, thanks to a group of musicians who shine with friendliness and serve as role models for living in sync with one another.

I’ve seen Neggy Gemmy, several times before, including once on the rooftop at Elsewhere, but this might have been my favorite show yet. The music was absolutely gorgeous. Her new album has a fantastic vibe and is currently my second-favorite of the year.

Enjoy!
