The Twilight Sad - Waiting For The Phone Call
Grief meets grandeur on The Twilight Sad’s “Waiting For The Phone Call,” where Robert Smith’s unmistakable guitar wraps around James Graham’s haunting voice.
What makes The Twilight Sad’s brand-new single, “Waiting For The Phone Call,” especially grand is the special guest contributing to it. Knowing that none other than Robert Smith lends his unmistakable guitar to the track already sends a thrill through my bones — and hearing that sound, the signature tone of The Cure’s frontman, takes it to another level.
Lyrically, it’s a tragic song — and I know exactly about such a phone call. The first one hit me off guard, yet knowing it might come doesn’t make it any easier. In addition to a gorgeous, expansive production, James Graham delivers his mesmerizing vocals and says:
“Waiting For The Phone Call is about grief, love, and mental illness. These things took over my life and I became ill. I lost the person most important to me in one of the cruellest ways. I’ve always used writing as a method of processing and coping with my emotions. My emotions became a problem and I couldn’t control them, writing music with Andy… especially the past seven years had been both the escape and the opportunity to process and try and make sense of life. We’ve all been waiting on a phone call that can change our lives at some point. This unfortunately focuses on a phone call that you never want to have.”
