London-based singer/songwriter Symbol Soup, the project of Michael Rea, is back with his evocative new single "Windbreaker," out now on Sad Club Records. With a warm, lo-fi glow, the track wraps intimate introspection in gentle layers, reflecting on the quiet strength of long-term love — and the soft shield it can be against a chaotic world. And beyond its irresistible melody, it’s Michael’s gorgeous, deeply comforting vocals that truly stayed with me.
Michael explains:
“Windbreaker is about wanting to protect the person you share your life with. Once you have harmony and a safe inner world with a partner, everything outside of that can feel harsh by comparison. I’ve been with my partner since we were seventeen, and as you grow together that shared world becomes more and more of a focal point for what’s important and what isn’t. It’s also about the weirdness of having so much common history, and having such a close witness as you become roughly the people you envisioned becoming when you were young and daunted.”
