Anxiety, dressed up in glossy synths and a beat that won’t sit still

“Point of No Return” is a pop song you could have heard on the radio in the late ’80s: fast, catchy, and satisfying, with a restless beat and ominous synths. New York singer Sarah Smith made it with producer Carlos Ruiz and her brother Jason. It’s about the conflict of wanting to be protected while wanting to stay in control.

Sarah explains:

It’s a song for the anxious-avoidant girlies. I’m drawn to big, nostalgic pop that can make sadness and anxiety feel cinematic and beautiful. I grew up on the Tumblr and recession-pop eras, and I love that melodramatic world-building, where escapism and anxiety can coexist.
