Pebe Sebert - Nice Girl

“Nice Girl” carries a rare sense of early clarity — originally recorded in the ’80s, but still sounding quietly fearless and current today.

Pebe Sebert has been writing hits for decades, including songs for her daughter Kesha, so approaching her self-titled debut album, released last month, came with plenty of assumptions on my end. None of them quite fit.

Even though the music is not “classic ’80s,” I wasn’t surprised to learn that these songs were originally recorded in that decade. There’s a certain openness and risk-taking to “Nice Girl” that feels very much of its time, without evoking nostalgia. When Pebe singsI’m not the right girl if you want a nice girl,” it sounds like the clear-eyed statement of someone who, early on, understood she wouldn’t fit a convenient role in the music industry.

The warped pop-rock production defies easy classification and still feels oddly current, as if this music had simply been waiting for the right moment to be heard.
