A hypnotic groove and quiet pull make “The Smoke” hard to leave behind.

"There’s something instantly gripping about the way Ora Cogan’s “The Smoke” settles in — that buoyant, almost deceptive rhythm pulling you along before you even realize it. It’s one of those songs that lingers after the first listen, quietly insisting on another, and another.

Built around a hypnotic groove with touches of congas, shakers, and weathered guitar textures, “The Smoke” feels both grounded and slightly unmoored — a nod to classic influences, yet entirely its own. It’s the latest single from her new album Hard Hearted Woman, and also marks her debut on Sacred Bones Record.

Ora Cogan on "The Smoke":

"’The Smoke’ is about theatre of the absurd. It is about how humans can be ridiculous and still beautiful. How we can hero worship, villainize and romanticize each other. Sometimes perception shifts depending on how and where the light is hitting. This song is about losing faith in people and continuing to bend towards love."

While modestly labeled as 'visulalizer,' I call this a brilliant video, which captures the joy and the absurdity of the song beautifully.
