Weightless from the very first note, Antwerp-based artist Noonzy's "If I Were You" feels as though it's gently drifting on a warm breeze. Every element is beautifully understated, from its airy melody to Noonzy's wonderfully expressive vocals, which give the song its emotional center. Produced together with Bullion (Ben Howard, Nilüfer Yanya), every detail feels thoughtfully placed without ever disturbing its delicate balance.
"If I Were You" was the song that made me completely fall in love with Noonzy's sound—and with his upcoming album Plan Is Bad. Together with the more earthy "Easy" and the playful "Yes, (I'm In)," it promises a record well worth looking forward to when it arrives on October 2 via Play It Again Sam.
Reflecting on the song's long journey, Noonzy (Arnaud Stockbroekx) says:
“This song went through a ridiculous number of shapes and forms. Originally, it was a pretty aggressive pop-rock song, haha. I love the soft, tropical-pop track it eventually became. It was the first song that Bullion and I ever worked on together, and it was the last one we finished. In the end, we built the entire song around the chorus melody. We got Nathan Pigott to double the chorus whistle melody on clarinet. During that recording session, we ended up experimenting with a few more clarinet ideas as well. To this day, I still find the long, stretched-out clarinet bed in the bridge incredibly satisfying when it kicks in. It's one of those moments in a song that never seems to lose its magic for me.”
