An escape plan with a stutter in its step and one distant city on its mind
As a “Small Town Girl,” the Canadian singer-songwriter MINOE is told not to want too much from life, and the men around her aren’t much help either. Along the way, the song unfolds like a Sundance movie: drunken men, hanging out with friends, and dreaming of escaping to LA.
Looking back, MINOE sees it differently:
When I wrote Small Town Girls, it instantly became the anchor of the entire album. The lyrics are an ode to the young women raised in tough situations, and an aspirational envisioning of what life can look like once you leave home. My small town shaped me, and today, I wouldn't change a thing about being a small town girl
Her own escape route never went through LA. It led to Montreal and, now, Toronto.
