Mel Denisse - going nowhere
In “going nowhere,” Mel Denisse lets shoegaze glow with quiet intensity and emotional gravity.
At first, I thought it unlikely that Nashville-based shoegazer Mel Denisse had Deftones’ “Minerva” in her ears when she wrote “going nowhere.” But I couldn’t shake the feeling — both songs share that shimmering, melancholic intensity that draws you in and won’t let go. When I finally read the press notes, it all clicked: Mel counts everything from Failure to Deftones to Tori Amos among her influences. No wonder her new single carries that haunting mix of tenderness and grit.
“going nowhere” unfolds like a dream you don’t quite want to wake from — a melancholy alt-rock and shoegaze piece inspired by the fantasy novel The Serpent & the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent. Its nostalgic glow touches on themes of survival by staying unseen, loyalty versus self-preservation, and the struggle to move forward when there’s nowhere left to land. Mel Denisse says:
“If the song makes you feel a gentle gut-punch–that’s the point. I’m slipping mirrors into the track so you have to sit with whatever stares back.”
