Krooked Kings - My Friend Max

A softer turn from Krooked Kings, “My Friend Max” lets the guitars lead while the emotion quietly settles in.

Krooked Kings - My Friend Max

We still have “Parking Lot” by Utah indie-rockers Krooked Kings in our ears, but their new single “My Friend Max” takes a noticeably softer turn. The synths step back, the tempo eases up, and the song leans into gentle guitar strumming that gives it room to breathe.

It’s a more mellow, almost quietly cheery moment for the band — even if the emotional undertow hasn’t disappeared entirely. “My Friend Max” shows Krooked Kings exploring a different shade of their sound, without losing the reflective core that makes their songs linger.

Keyboardist Davey Macey explains:

“‘My Friend Max’ was one of the more difficult songs to finish on the record. The lyrics, structure, and lead guitar all went through many iterations until we found the perfect fit for each. This song felt like kind of a new direction for us, being a bit more mellow and cheery sounding than our usual stuff. Still that didn’t stop us from writing some bummer lyrics, I guess we just can’t help it.”

Both “My Friend Max” and “Parking Lot” will appear on Krooked Kings’ upcoming album In Another Life.
