John Robert’s “Did It Just Because” lands with an easy confidence. Built on a great rhythmic pull, a touch of funk, and a bit of speak-singing, it keeps things light on its feet while never losing sight of the sting underneath. The restrained production suits it beautifully, giving the hook even more room to settle in.

Virginia-native singer/songwriter John Robert turns the usual heartbreak perspective on its head here, writing from the other side with sharp self-awareness and a welcome sense of mischief.

“I’ve been cheated on before and have been given every lazy excuse under the sun as to why: cognitive dissonance, drugs and alcohol, attachment style issues. However, the honest and most self-accountable answer is ‘because you wanted to.’ I’ve written my fair share of heartbreak ballads and thought it’d be fun to write from the other side of the coin. I was heavily inspired by a moment in Meg Thee Stallion’s NPR Tiny Desk Concert. She wrote an infidelity song that was… well fun! What a concept.”
