Endearments - Real Deal
Measured, atmospheric, and emotionally precise — Endearments’ “Real Deal” unfolds with quiet confidence.
With “Real Deal,” the Brooklyn-based indie rockers Endearments announce their upcoming album An Always Open Door — and immediately make room for excitement. There’s a confidence to this release that feels earned, not rushed, as the band leans into atmosphere while keeping the song emotionally grounded.
The three-piece is made up of vocalist and bassist Kevin Marksson, guitarist Anjali Nair, and drummer Will Haywood Smith. The accompanying music video, directed by Paul Desilva, follows the story of a drunken hookup and the self-conscious revelations that occur in its aftermath. Discussing the song and video, frontman Kevin Marksson explains:
“‘Real Deal’ is a song about feeling like you’re just a supporting player in someone else’s romantic idealization. I hint at Apollo and Daphne in the lyrics and the idea that someone can be so focused on what love ‘should’ feel like that they forget there is a real person on the other end. The music video plays with that concept in a fun way by having our heroine wake up in a strange apartment after what seemed like a perfect evening, but maybe wasn’t as perfect as she thought.”
