Art d’Ecco - The Death of Indie [Video]

Piercing rock guitars and heavy drums set "The Death of Indie" in motion, with Art d'Ecco leaning into the song's post-punk intensity and showing yet another side of his formidable vocals. And yes, he can scream, too. Given the subject at hand, you might feel like joining him.

"The Death of Indie" is the towering seven-minute opener of the Vancouver artist's fifth album, Scheele’s Green, due October 23 via Paper Bag Records. The song takes aim at the fear and anxiety surrounding AI and its ever-growing reach into our lives and, especially, the arts, and Art d'Ecco says:

"It's the sound of fear and anxiety–about AI, and the disruption and uncertainty that this technology has triggered as it infiltrates just about every facet of our daily lives, including the arts."

The accompanying Loken Charon-directed video takes that unease into deliberately unsettling territory, with its puppet-like tech titans dancing their way through a dystopian world. It is creepy because it is meant to be creepy, and it certainly gets its point across.

Art d'Ecco has long been one of my favorite artists, precisely because he never seems content to stay in one place. With "The Death of Indie," he pushes his artistic vision further yet, and if his own hope for the new album is that people will ask, "That's Art d'Ecco??", this first glimpse suggests he might very well get his wish.
