The other day, Elke pulled an old MacBook box out of our vault. Filled with neatly organized business cards and ticket stubs, it sent us straight down memory lane. Business cards are rarer but still around. Ticket stubs are gone for good.

If you were around before the mid-2000s, you remember having to go to a box office to purchase tickets[1](#fn1-27561). For popular shows, this was sometimes an event in itself: long lines of hopeful fans, overnight camping to snatch the first tickets. We never took it to the extreme, but I still remember the rush you felt when it was your turn and the clerk handed you the coveted stubs.

Before most vendors switched to tickets printed ad hoc on special paper with anti-forgery features, big tours often had fancy pre-printed tickets that served as memorabilia after the show. Unfortunately, the ones we used as wall decorations in Munich faded in the sun and were ultimately discarded when we moved to New York.

Unfortunately, this is true of other things, like our collection of home-recorded cassettes, which we didn’t realize would become priceless memorabilia years later. We discarded them and felt good about decluttering our lives.

The stub for Elke’s first concert, Mike Oldfield in Munich in 1982, was spared this fate because it is relatively plain. While I no longer have my first ticket, there is – incredibly – a full [audio recording](https://youtu.be/o9s42pQjqKc?si=JgPXkXp8eUlP-ese&ref=glamglare.com) of the show, which includes a photo of the stub.

Unless you have a large attic and never moved, you probably lost many once-precious things. But today, we can tap into shared memories, like the one I found on YouTube, and relive past moments.

## Discovery of the Week: Little Book of Olives

I spotted The [**Little Book of Olives**](https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-little-book-of-olives-a-guide-to-cooking-eating-and-drinking-for-the-brine-inclined-anna-hezel/c96ffdbe354c4fa3?ean=9781419784835&ref=glamglare.com) during our Sunday outing (more about it in the 9 Photos further down) and couldn’t resist. Author **Anna Hezel** is a food journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times and Bon Appétit, and she also wrote Tin to Table, a cookbook devoted to tinned fish.

It’s compact and beautifully illustrated, with a guide to different olive varieties and where they come from, plus simple ideas like making restaurant-style olives at home. What I especially love: the recipes put olives front and center. As someone who loves them, I’m happy to give them the spotlight and explore the book further. It just came out two weeks ago, and if you’re a fellow olive lover, get yourself a copy too—time and money well spent.

## Cover Song of the Week: Kelly Clarkson - Monster Mash

We like the moody decorations, but aside from that, we’re not particularly into Halloween. However, we treat ourselves to an evening of listening to a Halloween playlist, at least until “Monster Mash,” Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s 1962 classic, has been played.

Of course, this song has inspired many covers over the decades, including Kelly Clarkson’s anthemic version, which she performed on her TV show in 2022\. I found it better than expected, so it is curious that she never released it as a song.

### 1 Year Ago: [Moniah - What if I Cry About It](https://www.glamglare.com/music/moniah-what-if-i-cry-about-it/)

The London pop singer-songwriter has released two singles since her 2025 debut EP, one about the decision to break up and one about true love.

### 5 Years Ago: [Jeannel - Horses](https://www.glamglare.com/music/song-pick-jeannel-horses/)

We featured Jeannel’s new song, “[ANGEL](https://www.glamglare.com/music/jeannel-angel/),” as our Song Pick last Monday. “Horses,” released five years ago, showcases a more experimental side of the German singer, songwriter, producer, and cellist. Her debut album is set for 2027.

### 10 Years Ago: [Lir Shilton - Home](https://www.glamglare.com/music/song-pick-lir-shilton-home/)

The London singer-songwriter released only one album, *Nothing But A Ghost*, in 2016\. The hauntingly beautiful “Home” is a compelling invitation to revisit her music.

## A Sunday Across the River

A ferry ride across the river can make even a familiar city feel like somewhere else. We spent Sunday afternoon wandering Brooklyn Heights, past leafy brownstone blocks and the former home of playwright Arthur Miller, then browsing the shops along [Montague Street](https://www.montaguebid.com/?ref=glamglare.com). The Promenade drew us back as the light began to change: the sun settling over the harbor, a red-tailed hawk perched on one of the viewing scopes, and Manhattan glowing across the water. A few hours on the Brooklyn side, and then the subway home.

1. Some venues still have a box office, and you can save considerably by avoiding the “convenience fees” charged by ticket vendors. Alas, the opening hours often make it hard to take advantage of this. [↩︎](#fnr1-27561)
