I’m halfway through Miki Berenyi’s 2022 memoir [*Fingers Crossed*](https://bookshop.org/p/books/fingers-crossed-how-music-saved-me-from-success-rough-trade-book-of-the-year-miki-berenyi/1c753c72b56c0ab4?ean=9781788705561&next=t&ref=glamglare.com), which of course makes me curious about her music again. Mostly known as the singer of the 1990s shoegaze band Lush, she now fronts the [**Miki Berenyi Trio**](https://glamglare.com/artist/miki-berenyi-trio?ref=glamglare.com), making music that reflects the creative freedom of not having to prove anything anymore.

“Island Of One” is an energetic track built on a Latin-leaning groove, blending guitar work, electronics, and Miki’s vocals into a rush of sound. Beneath that drive sits a more reflective theme, as the song touches on how family relationships shift and grow more complex over time.

Miki says about the song:

> "Island of One took shape because I became quite obsessed with the track ‘Just A Western’ by Nilüfer Yanya last year, and the Latin-y beat got me inspired, But I wanted a lively, catchy song to add to our live set, so it ended up less laidback and more 60s-breezy with some driving, scratchy guitars – once all three MB3 members pile in on the embellishments, a song ends up a fair distance from where it started!"
