This week: new sounds, a classic reimagined, and moments of art, light, and life in New York. - Author: Oliver Bouchard - Tags: Newsletter A week ago, we went to [Zizi](https://www.ziziwinebarnyc.com/?ref=glamglare.com), a Mediterranean wine bar on John St. It’s a small place with a classic after-work drink vibe, nestled between the tall office towers of the Financial District. They have a good happy hour, so what is not to love? Over the PA came, as so often, international hits from past decades. Later, the mid-20s bartender mentioned to us that she selected Fleetwood Mac radio on Spotify. Usually, they would play a more eclectic playlist that fit the Mediterranean theme, but the staff grew tired of it and preferred their own choices when the boss was not there. Well, I could not think of a safer choice than greatest hits adjacent to Fleetwood Mac. On a side note, she told us her favorite band is ABBA, a band that had its heyday when her parents were kids. It’s sweet that she loves that kind of music, but it’s bad news for young artists: who is supposed to listen to their work if not even their peers do? And if playlists in public places like Zizi help Fleetwood Mac and Co. rack up more and more streams, what is left for those just starting out? Some experts give the “brutally honest” answer: why would anybody listen to new music if so much great music has already been made? Even someone who enjoys discovering new sounds can dive into an endless pool of music from past decades, all with some form of gatekeeper approval, and potentially with memories of or nostalgia for the so-called good old times. Reminiscing about the past is fun, but here are some good reasons to listen to current artists: - You live in the here and now, so connecting with the culture and art of the here and now enhances your life. - New artists like [little luna](https://glamglare.com/artist/little-luna?ref=glamglare.com) or [Shaina Hayes](https://glamglare.com/artist/shaina-hayes?ref=glamglare.com), to name two glamglare favorites, don’t make lower-quality or lesser-value music than Fleetwood Mac. They may not (yet) have stood the test of time, but who knows where they stand in 50 years from now. - Artists from the past decades were less diverse than today. For example, if you want to hear female artistic voices – not just vocals – you have to look at the last 20 years, when women started taking creative charge of music in all genres at scale[1](#fn1-20513). Speaking of new artists, [The New Colossus Festival](https://www.newcolossusfestival.com/?ref=glamglare.com) returns for its eighth year to New York’s Lower East Side. We know one artist – Ask Carol – from their first announcement round. That means lots of great new music and artists for us to discover, too. ## Discovery of the Week: Aniqo - Time to Heal For her epic, soaring anthem “Time To Heal,” Berlin singer-songwriter [**Aniqo**](https://glamglare.com/artist/aniqo?ref=glamglare.com) shot a beautiful short film in Sintra, near Lisbon, Portugal. The fairy-tale forest where a mythical wedding takes place doesn’t need any special effects – the parks around Sintra’s castles really look like that. We’ve been there and were just as charmed. ## Cover Song of the Week: “Where the Streets Have No Name” Yesterday, while listening to a Pet Shop Boys live album I hadn’t heard before, it hit me: THAT is the song I want to feature in this week’s newsletter. And, in the process, I wanted to learn a little more about it. Why did Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe decide to tackle one of U2’s biggest hits? As it turns out, the idea goes back to when the Pet Shop Boys were recording “I’m Not Scared” with Eighth Wonder singer Patsy Kensit. Chris Lowe realized that “Where the Streets Have No Name” could flow directly into “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” They also thought the guitar on U2’s recording sounded like a sequencer, making the song a surprisingly natural candidate for their electronic world. The original plan was for Eighth Wonder to record the medley. Instead, the Pet Shop Boys eventually took it on themselves, transforming what they called “a mythic rock song” into a stomping Hi-NRG anthem. Neil Tennant later admitted that, after “Being Boring” had not become the hit they had hoped for, they needed one: > “It was absolutely shameless.” Even better, they released the song as a double A-side with “How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously?”, their sharp take on the pomposity of pop stars. Pairing the two songs became part of the joke, or, as they put it, ‘a further comment.’ U2 responded with a perfectly dry twist on another Pet Shop Boys hit: > “What have we done to deserve this?” Watch the Pet Shop Boys’ gloriously exuberant music video, and look out for the fantastic 2023 live version from *Dreamworld: The Greatest Hits Live at the Royal Arena Copenhagen*. And then, of course, there is the original: U2’s phenomenal rooftop performance, filmed in downtown Los Angeles on March 27, 1987\. “Where the Streets Have No Name” opens what might still be their best album, *The Joshua Tree*[2](#fn2-20513). It is a music video I never get tired of watching. My friend came to visit from Australia, and while our time together was scarce, we snatched an afternoon at MoMA ([floor 4, 1950 - 1980](https://www.moma.org/calendar/floors/4?ref=glamglare.com)) and an early evening at our favorite outdoor space, Bryant Park. And then, of course, came the remembrance of September 11\. Having lived in New York since April 2001 and only recently moved into a beautiful apartment across from the World Trade Center, I know that day’s significance and remember it beyond its anniversary. Two days later, life offered a very different kind of emotion. On September 13, after a 37-year drought—the last German man to win the US Open was Boris Becker in 1989—a player from Germany won again.
